Gavin Molloy signs new deal with Shels
Shelbourne star Gavin Molloy has put pen to paper and extended his deal with the Drumcondra club until the end of the 2024 season.
The 21-year-old has become a key player for the Reds under boss Damien Duff, starting every game this season.
Molloy joined Shels in 2021 following stints with Drogheda United and Bohemians under-19s, but has flourished since moving to Tolka Park.
Ian Morris handed him his debut towards the end of the league-winning season and he has been a virtual ever-present since Duff took over last year, making 19 appearances in 2022.
The midfielder followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Theo - a Shels legend who passed away in February - by wearing the captain’s armband against Dundalk this season.
Molloy is also related to former Ireland international Richard Dunne, and former league winners Tommy Dunne and Tony Cousins, as well as UCD striker Evan Caffrey.
And ex-Ireland international Duff spoke of his delight at tying down a player steeped in Shelbourne tradition for at least another 18 months.
He said: “It is great news that Gavin has agreed to another year here. As long as Gavin is playing in Ireland, I will always want him at Shelbourne.
“He has continuously grown week-in, week-out, since his debut. He is a pleasure to work with on and off the pitch and is without doubt a top player in the league.
“We are very happy he is staying as I am sure his Grandad Theo is from up above.”
And Molloy said it was an easy decision to sign on the dotted line, having seen his star rise over the past 12 months.
“I’m delighted to extend my deal until next year, I feel I’m at an important part of my development, and I think there’s no better place to be than at Shels,” he added.
“My football at the moment is giving me the most enjoyment I’ve ever experienced and long may it continue.
“The club has been excellent with me since I’ve come in and I can’t wait to build on this.”
