Ireland international Daryl Horgan has completed a loan move from Wycombe Wanderers to League 2 high flyers Stevenage Borough until the end of the season.

The Galway native, having previously lined out for League of Ireland clubs Dundalk and Cork City, drops down a division in the hope of securing more first team football.

Only last season, Horgan started in the Chairboy’s League One Play-Off Final defeat to Sunderland at Wembley. However, the 17 times capped international has struggled for game time this season, so much so that he has even been left out of match-day squads on recent occasions.

The 30-year-old was handed a rare start against League 1 pacesetters Plymouth Argyle in Wanderers’ second last match, albeit in a much-changed line-up, having been omitted from the squad entirely for the Boxing Day victory over Bristol Rovers. However, he again failed to make the bench for the following game, a hugely impressive 3-0 win over Peterborough United.

Horgan is not the only ex League of Ireland player to turn out for The Boro in recent years, although he will hope to have more success than what was enjoyed by the likes of Luke Wade-Slater, David McAllister, Kenny McEvoy, Pat Hoban and Don Cowan at the English club over the last few years.

It was in January 2017 that Horgan completed his much-anticipated move from Dundalk to Preston North End, alongside team-mate Andy Boyle.

After initial promise at Deepdale, Horgan departed after 18 months to join Scottish Premier League side Hibernian, then managed by Neil Lennon. His time at Easter Road is best remembered for a memorable double he scored in an Edinburgh derby victory against huge rivals Hearts in 2019.

The following year, Horgan was on the move again, this time joining then Championship side Wycombe Wanderers. Despite initially being a first team regular, the winger, who started his career at Salthill Devon, was unable to prevent the club being relegated back to League 1 after only one season.

The midfielder scored one goal in 85 league appearance over the last 2-and-a-half years for Wycombe.

Horgan was also a regular fixture in the Republic of Ireland set-up during the early stages of Stephen Kenny’s reign, notably scoring in the manager’s long awaited first victory, a 4-1 win away to Andorra in June 2021.

At 30, Horgan is still young enough to recapture his best form and he will hope that the move to Stevenage will reignite a career that had possibly stagnated at Adams Park.
