Sheridan: We let ourselves down
Republic of Ireland Under-21 striker Cillian Sheridan admits that the squad cannot understand the poor form which has plagued their European Qualifying campaign, after losing 2-1 to Armenia on Wednesday night.
The squad have played seven games in Group 2 without a victory and with just four draws to console themselves with.
After losing 4-1 to the Armenian’s in November, Sheridan said that the team hoped to forget the defeat and focus on the game.
“We talked about it all week about how we needed to get it out of our minds, but we just weren’t good enough," said Sheridan.
“The whole campaign we’ve been playing well and not getting the results. Against Armenia in the two games we just haven’t played well enough to get the results and we all know it’s not good enough.”
Sheridan admits that the team know that the performances haven’t been up to standard.
“We just weren’t there tonight. I think if we knew why, then I don’t think it would have been the same result. It’s frustrating because we know how well we can play and we’ve let ourselves down," he said.
With just three games remaining, Sheridan hopes that the team can put together a few good performances and collect some much needed wins.
“We have to show that we’re not that bad and that we can beat teams and can play well," he stated. “We’ve got three games to put it right and hopefully we will.”
