Szymon Marciniak will have the honour of refereeing Sunday’s World Cup Final between Argentina and France.

The 41-year-old has officiated both teams at the tournament in Qatar. He was the referee for Argentina's last-16 2-1 win over Australia and France's group-stage victory against Denmark by the same scoreline.

“We expect a very fast game,” said Marciniak ahead of the biggest match in world football. “This is the final, nobody wants to concede a goal, so I expect maybe at the beginning, being careful a little bit. But they have such big names, such big stars, everything can happen.

Pawel Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz will run the lines for the final. Listkiewicz’s father, Michał Listkiewicz, officiated in the World Cup final in 1990 and at the World Cup 1994.

Marciniak took charge of Ireland’s heavy home defeat to Denmark in November 2017 and the Boys in Green’s away game against Switzerland in 2019 as part of Ireland’s abortive attempt to qualify for EURO2020.
