League Report – Treaty United 0 - 2 Wexford
Michael Cooke reports from the Markets Field
Goals from Jack Doherty and Dinny Corcoran proved decisive as Wexford scored a 2-0 victory over Treaty United at the Markets Field.
The game was a lacklustre affair overall which isn’t surprising given that Treaty were already assured of a play-off place while the visitors hopes were capped at a sixth-placed finish.
The first half was almost completely devoid of goalmouth action but Wexford capitalised when the only meaningful chance presented itself.
Conor Davis sent Len O’Sullivan away down the left and his perfectly weighted cross was headed in by Jack Doherty at the far post.
O’Sullivan was again to the fore as Wexford engineered the first notable chance of the second half on 58 minutes.
Conor Davis played in the Wexford midfielder who skilfully wrongfooted Mark Walsh before forcing a fine save from Conor Winn inside the box.
17 minutes later Wexford went close again. Conor Barry teed up fellow substitute Conor Crowley with a stylish backheel pass, but Crowley failed to hit the target.
Two minutes later, the visitors doubled their advantage from a corner kick which was awarded after Barry’s shot from inside the box was deflected out of play by Mark Walsh.
Barry’s delivery was collected by Dinny Corcoran and the Wexford striker skilfully outmanoeuvred Darren Collins before firing low to the net.
Treaty could’ve pulled one back three minutes from time. Enda Curran connected with Matt Keane’s corner kick but somehow, he skied his effort over the crossbar.
The hosts failed to score a consolation goal, but the result doesn’t matter as Treaty can still look forward to first-leg play-off meeting with Waterford on October 26th.
The pairing was confirmed after the Blues sealed a second-placed finish by virtue of a 4-2 win over Athlone Town.
