FAI Cup Saturday – Last of the non-league teams exit
With Derry City, UCD, Bohemians, Dundalk and Shelbourne all progressing on Friday in the FAI Cup Second Round, it was left to Malahide United and Maynooth University Town to try and cause a cup upset.
Malahide United defeated Salthill Devon 6-5 on penalties in the last round after their game ended 2-2. That earned the County Dublin side a home tie against First Division side Waterford.
Unfortunately for Ger Coughlan’s side, it was almost over as a contest after 13 minutes as the visitors raced into a 3-0 lead.
It took seven minutes for the first goal to arrive. Niall O’Keeffe played Shae Griffin through and he lobbed the ball over the advancing Dylan McNulty.
Two minutes later, the Blues doubled their lead as Roland Idowu fired a shot past the Malahide netminder.
A devastating six minutes for the home side concluded with the concession of a third goal, Wassim Aouachria the scorer. Just past the half-hour mark, Patterson added a fourth.
With 12 minutes to go, Darragh Power made it five as he got on the end of a Cantwell header. The victory was complete in injury-time when Aouachria got his second and Waterford’s sixth.
The second game of the day saw Maynooth University Town take on Treaty United. Maynooth had defeated Villa FC 2-1 in the previous round with Treaty recording a 5-0 win over Usher Celtic.
Unfortunately for Maynooth, another First Division team name would be appearing in the quarter-final bowl, as goals from Enda Curran, William Armshaw and Lee Devitt Molloy gave the Limerick side a 3-0 win.
With only one game remaining in this round, Drogheda United versus Shamrock Rovers at 5pm in Head in the Game Park, we know that that Tuesday’s quarter-final draw will consist of six Premier Division sides and two First Division.
