FAI Cup Report: Treaty United 5 – 0 Usher Celtic
Michael Cooke reports from the Markets Field
Treaty United reached the second round of the FAI Cup after cruising to a 5-0 victory over Usher Celtic at the Markets Field.
Dean George scored twice for Tommy Barrett’s men while Sean Guerins, Enda Curran and Success Edogun were also on target.
Treaty narrowly shaded the attacking exchanges in the first half but were far more potent, ruthless and clinical in the second half.
The deadlock was broken as early as the sixth minute; Sean Guerins headed in Marc Ludden’s corner kick via the underside of the crossbar.
The corner was awarded after Ben O’Riordan attempted to play in George but instead Paul Keane latched onto his pass and cleared it out of play.
The hosts came close again nine minutes later. George improvised well to control Willie Armshaw’s left-wing cross inside the box, but his subsequent shot was easily dealt with by Karl Lynam.
Treaty goalkeeper Conor Winn was eventually tested on 16 minutes. Gary Gannon’s powerful 25-yard effort was deflected out for a corner which the visitors couldn’t exploit.
Two minutes later his opposite number produced a decent save. Lynam used his feet to keep out George’s low shot following impressive work by Armshaw out wide on the left.
Treaty had another chance on 36 minutes. Ludden’s cross found Armshaw inside the box, but his effort missed the target completely as the hosts led 1-0 at the break.
Treaty doubled their advantage within three minutes of the restart. Ludden found George inside the box who took his time before firing a shot through Lynam’s legs and into the net.
George added his goal 13 minutes later. Ludden headed Armshaw’s corner into the path of Ben O’Riordan whose header came crashing off the crossbar, but the Treaty striker tapped in the rebound.
On 67 minutes, Usher’s Robert Martin tested Winn with a well-taken free kick after he was fouled 20 yards out, but the visitors failed to engineer another meaningful chance.
Treaty’s scorer-in-chief Enda Curran was subsequently introduced and the clubs’ scorer-in-chief made a successful impact on 70 minutes.
He scored his 11th goal of the season from the penalty spot; the spot-kick was awarded after Martin brought down Lee Devitt inside the box.
Another substitute was on target right at the death; new signing Success Edogun marked his debut in style by finding the net with a spectacular 30-yard strike.
