Munster Senior League round up: Trebles for Rockmount and Corinthians

After a long 12 months, the Munster Senior League season came to an end with Rockmount as champions.

The north-side Cork club dominated intermediate football in Ireland this year and won an unprecedented treble.

Not only did they win the Munster Senior League Premier Division, they also lifted the FAI Intermediate Cup after beating Bluebell United 2-0 in the final. The team also defeated College Corinthians 2-1 in the O’Connell Cup final at the beginning of June.

The next piece of silverware on Rockmount’s radar is the much coveted Munster Senior Cup. The defending champions are into the semi-finals and they will take on League of Ireland side Cobh Ramblers later this summer.

Corinthians

College Corinthians, who are managed by former Irish international Joe Gamble, won the other three trophies on offer.

The club opened their season with the group stages of the Keane Cup and they qualified for the quarters-finals after overcoming Midleton, Avondale United, and Cobh Wanderers.

Tramore Athletic were beaten 4-0 in the next round and in the semi-finals, two goals was enough to see off Mayfield United. The final was held at Ringmahon Park and Corinthians won on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Joe Gamble’s team then beat Bandon and St Marys in the Donie Forde Trophy. This put them into the final, where UCC were disposed of on penalties.

Shoot-outs ended up being Corinthians’ speciality this season. In the Beamish Stout Senior Cup Ringmahon Rangers and Mayfield United were beaten on spot kicks. Corinthians met local rivals Douglas Hall in the final and Joe Gamble’s team won this south-side derby 3-0.

Their cup treble ended a six year wait for a senior trophy to come to Corinthians Park.

Mayfield

Elsewhere, Mayfield United defeated Leeds AFC in the Pop Kelleher Cup final in Blarney. This was the first trophy won by the club since their Beamish Stout Senior Cup success in 2008.

The Munster Senior League will not be represented in this year’s FAI Cup as the three teams who qualified were beaten in the preliminary round.

Killester Donnycarney got the better of Carrigaline United, Pike Rovers defeated Everton AFC, and Bluebell United knocked out Rockmount.
