Dundalk FC defender Mark Connolly is a new addition to the Lilywhite defence for the 2022 season and the Monaghan native spoke exclusively with extratime.ie on Friday night after a 2-1 victory at home to Sligo Rovers.

In response to a question regarding the victory, the former Republic of Ireland Under 21 international was happy about the result but took a long term approach in relation to performance and particularly the defensive meanness displayed so far this campaign.

'There are positives for us but the most important thing is that we're consistent and if we're consistent we'll not be far away.'

'There's 8 games and (we've conceded from) a throw in and two penalties so defensively we've been solid and today I thought we created a lot more chances.'

Similar to his manager O'Donnell's comments after the game, on loan Dundee United defender Connolly referenced the controlled nature of the Dundalk performance on Friday evening.

'On the ball we were composed and it's a very young team. It's that old cliche but it'll take time to click. I don't think we're far away'.

'I think tonight was a good result and we've a tough game on Monday night against Shamrock Rovers'
