McCarthy seals move to Athlone
After spending time on trial with Atletico Madrid, Brian McCarthy has opted to continue his career in the League of Ireland after joining Athlone Town.
The lanky defender had been contracted to Bohemians last season, but when his contract ran out he decided to explore a few different options - one of which was a stint training with La Liga giants Atletico.
While nothing came of the trial, McCarthy quickly moved on as he trained with Galway United and attracted the attention of other clubs before landing at Lissywollen.
The 22-year-old had previously enjoyed a loan spell with Athlone, so it didn't take much for manager Brendan Place to convince him to agree terms on a one-year deal.
McCarthy will now aim to replicate the form that he showed whilst on loan with Longford Town last term and help Athlone improve on their 10th place finish in the First Division.
Meanwhile, Place has also confirmed the signings of goalkeeper Michael Schlingermann and midfielder Kevin Williamson.
