Waterford United boss Stephen Henderson has strengthened his team's striking options with the signing of Timmy Purcell.

The Blues have their sights set on clinching promotion to the Premier Division this season and the addition of 21-year-old Purcell will certainly aid that pursuit.

Purcell started his League of Ireland career with Shelbourne, but it was with UCD where he really made an impact as a tricky frontman with an ability to carve open defences.

While he has not been the most prolific striker in the league over the past two seasons, the Dubliner has showed that he is improving all of the time. And that is one of the reasons why clubs like Cork City took a close look at him last year.

However, he has now sealed a move to Waterford, where he will attempt to hold down a regular place in Henderson's starting eleven.

Meanwhile, the club have also confirmed that Paul Carey, who starred for the Blues' U-20's last season, has agreed terms on a new deal.
