Kenna joins Saints as Guy pens new deal
St Patrick's Athletic have strengthened their defensive options with the capture of Conor Kenna, while also convincing Ryan Guy to sign a new contract at the club.
Kenna had been expecting to line out for Drogheda United again this year after helping them to survive in the Premier Division last term, but financial problems with The Boynesiders alerted St Pat's to his services.
The former UCD centre-back could form a new-look pairing in the middle of the Saints defence with fellow new recruit Shane Guthrie.
"To be honest, it all happened very quickly. But my aim will be to get back playing football, to break into the St Pat's team and help the team finish as high up the league table as possible," said Kenna.
Meanwhile, Guy has penned a one-year extension to his current contract for 2010 after taking time during the off-season to consider his next move.
It had been reported that the American attacker had attracted the attention of clubs in Germany and Sweden after a move to a Coca-Cola League One team - believed to be Tranmere Rovers - broke down due to work permit issues. So for St Pat's to keep hold of the in-demand player is something of a coup.
The 24-year-old is looking forward to the new season and thinks that the Saints even have a chance of lifting some silverware after Pete Mahon restructured the squad by bringing in some exciting players.
"The security of two years will definitely help me with my own performance," said Guy after confirming the deal.
"This year I hope to take on more responsibility, we have a lot of young players coming through and though I’m pretty young myself I have been at the club for a number of seasons now so I feel can offer more leadership on the pitch.
"I’m very excited with the new players in the squad – they’re young and motivated and I see us with a real chance of winning a trophy this year. Winning a trophy is not only a team goal but would be a personal goal for me as a footballer."
