Wigan Athletic sign Northern Ireland international Josh Magennis
Wigan Athletic have announced the signing of striker Josh Magennis from Hull City on a two and a half year deal.
Wigan are currently fourth in League One however have five games in hand over second placed Sunderland and only trail the Black Cats by five points.
Magennis has previously played in the division as he helped fire Grant McCann’s side to the Championship last season netting 18 league goals for the Tigers in the process.
The striker was out of contract at the end of the season on Humberside after seeing his option year activated last summer, however the longer-term security offered to him by the Latics has tempted him to return to Lancashire.
The Bangor man has won over 60 caps for his country with the 31 year old just shy of 100 career senior goals to date in total.
Magennis isn’t a stranger to Lancashire as he previously played for Wigan’s rivals Bolton Wanderers before making his move to Hull in 2019.
On putting pen to paper at the DW Stadium Magennis said: “I’m absolutely over the moon.
“When my representation told me that this move was a possibility, it was something I was very interested in.
“I’m very much looking forward to it and hoping to get back to the Championship with a successful team again.
“Goals is something I can hopefully bring to the team.
“Last season was fantastic at Hull with what we achieved as a team, but also for myself personally.
“I’m hoping I can bring that here as well and just add to the quality that this team already has. Hopefully I can hit the ground running and be able to add another string to our bow.
“I will bring hard work and put myself about for this team and do everything I can to get three points in every game we play.
“I think belief and camaraderie is massive, and I think we have that here.
“Speaking to the Gaffer and those that work behind the scenes, it’s a massive part of the culture here that everyone gets on.
“I think that goes a long way, especially when times are tough and games are going to be coming thick and fast.
“We are a big scalp for teams in this league, and there’s high expectations. But I believe there’s enough quality in this squad to meet those expectations and have a successful season.
“I will bring hard work and put myself about for this team and do everything I can to get three points in every game we play.”
Magennis who has also played for Kilmarnock, Aberdeen and Charlton Athletic has been issued with the number 28 shirt at the Latics.
He could make his debut for the club when they travel to strugglers Doncaster Rovers.
