West Ham sign Linfield teenager Callum Marshall
Premier League side West Ham United have completed the signing of young Linfield striker Callum Marshall.
The 17 year-old broke into David Healy’s first team earlier this season and found the net against PSNI in the League Cup in an 11-0 win.
He also helped Linfield Swifts reach the Christmas Day showpiece in the form of the Steel & Sons Cup final against Newington who went on to lift the trophy on the day.
Marshall became one of the first inductees into the clubs Scholarship scheme.
The purpose of the scheme is to prepare young scholars for a first team career, either with Linfield or across the water.
Following a successful trial period at the east London sides academy prior to the festive break, Marshall will now look to build on a promising start to his career under the coaching system at Chadwell Heath.
West Ham Academy Manager Ricky Martin told the clubs official website “I’d like to welcome Callum to West Ham United. We’re delighted to have him sign for the Club.
“We hope he will have a very successful career at the Football Club.”
“Callum came over before Christmas and trained with our U18s squad. He made a really big impact and impression here, so we’re now excited to welcome him to east London and into our Academy of Football family.
On departing Windsor Park Healy said to Linfieldfc.com “I want to wish Callum every success with this exciting new challenge that he’s now setting out upon. It’s a wonderful opportunity for him at such a leading Premiership club in West Ham United.
"Everyone at Linfield is delighted with the recognition that both Callum and the club’s Scholarship scheme has earned and we will all be monitoring Callum’s progress with a keen interest.”
"He’s been training with our first team squad all season and he’s made a very positive impression on all our players and staff.
"We are sure he has the attitude and determination that will be required to make the most of this amazing opportunity that has come his way.
Marshall could make his debut for the Iron’s under-18 side as quickly as this coming Saturday when they travel to West Bromwich Albion if selected in the squad.
