Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu began his 2022 with another cleansheet – his 11th of the season in all competitions for League One side Portsmouth.

Bazunu's team claimed a point after a scoreless draw away to Cambridge in a game that was disrupted due to a medical emergency in the crowd.

The teams were taken off the pitch for a lengthy period in the second half as a home supporter required medical treatment.

Speaking to the Portsmouth News after the game in relation to the lengthy stoppage, Bazunu, who is on a season long loan from Manchester City, noted that “I didn’t really know too much what was going on when I was on the pitch.

“When we were back in the dressing room, it was just a case of treating it as half-time really. We just went in and got off our feet.

“The ref then came back in and called us back out. It was two or three minutes warming up and then we were ready to go again.”

There were 27 minutes of stoppage play due to the medical emergency – with Wes Hoolahan coming on for Cambridge in the 18th minute of injury time as a substitute.

“It was a very unexpected break in play,” said 19 year-old Bazunu, “but it was just about adapting to what happened because it was the same for both teams.”

Portsmouth, who also had Irish international Ronan Curtis in their side for this Bank Holiday Monday fixture, will be disappointed they couldn’t pick up all three points as their opponents Cambridge were reduced to ten men for the last half an hour following Sam Smith picking up a second yellow card.

Pompey currently sit eighth in the table six points off promotion play-off positions.
