Dundalk continue in 2022 with their recent tradition of former UCD players at the club with the re-signing of Greg Sloggett and David McMillan.

Meathman Sloggett enters his third season at the club while Templeogue’s McMillan will line out for the club he first signed for ahead of the 2014 season.

The 25-year-old Sloggett over the last two seasons played in the Europa League Groups Stages and lifted the FAI Cup for the Lilywhites in 2020. The previous year his Derry City side were defeated in the League Cup Final by Dundalk while in 2018, a solitary Patrick McEleney strike saw the Louth side advance at the expense of Sloggett’s UCD team.

That game also saw new Dundalk signing Paul Doyle feature for the Students and Sloggett is looking forward to linking up with his old teammate once again.

Speaking to dundalkfc.com, he was full of praise for the Westport man.“Technically, he is a brilliant player. He’s really intense in how he plays, with and without the ball, and he will be a great asset to the club. He is a huge addition and it’s fantastic to see him on board.”

Head coach Stephen O’Donnell was also enthusiastic about Sloggett’s re-signing. “I’ve been admiring Greg for the last couple of years and I’m looking forward to working with him. As a midfielder, there is huge scope there for him. He has the athleticism and we feel we can develop him even more.

“We saw Greg as a big one to try and keep here and we are delighted to have done that. I don’t think he has sampled the ‘real’ Dundalk yet and he’s another one that we are looking forward to working with on a day-to-day basis.”

When commenting on the re-signing of McMillan, who netted seven times in 29 appearances last season, the Galwegian was full of praise for the striker. “Davey’s performances last season showed that he is still very capable of scoring goals at the highest level and he is a fantastic character to have in your team and around your club.

“You can’t underestimate how important the spine of your team is and having himself and Patrick Hoban will give us a huge platform to build off with our striking options, which is very important.”

McMillan’s first term at the club will forever be remembered for his crucial European goals during their 2016 Europa League Group Stages campaign while, after returning from a two and a half year spell at St Johnstone, the highlight of his second spell was the 2020 FAI Cup Final when he netted a hat trick against Shamrock Rovers in a 4-2 win for the Lilywhites.

The 33-year-old is the League of Ireland record European goalscorer and is part of  growing number of re-signings announced by the club this week and, when speaking with dundalkfc.com, the frontman was positive about next season.

“The players that have signed know what it takes to win trophies and be successful here. I think they have a connection with the fans and they know what is expected of them. The management team have done well to nail them down and hopefully, we can build on that now.”
