With the departure of one full back, in the shape of Conor Kane’s move to Shelbourne, Drogheda United have wasted no time in the recruitment of another, with the arrival of Evan Weir to the Boynesider

The former UCD defender was most recently lining out for Maynooth University Town following his departure from the Students at the end of the season.

Having been a regular throughout his time at Belfield, Weir was named in Jim Crawford’s provisional Under 21 Republic of Ireland squad against Montenegro alongside current team mates David Odumosu, Dean Williams and Andrew Quinn.

However, it was when playing with Maynooth University that the move to the Boynesiders came about, according to the player himself when speaking with droghedaunitedfc.com, “I was talking with James Clarke, who is on my Maynooth scholarship team in college and he spoke good about the club.

"I’ve a few mates there as well and they always speak good about the club.

“I was looking at it, if I could get a call or anything I’d say ‘Yeah’ and Daire contacted me and said they were interested. I straight away said, ‘Listen, I’m going’. My two years with UCD were amazing, I loved every minute of it.

"I feel myself now, to progress as a footballer, I need to go into the Premier Division and see what it’s like. Getting in, playing, getting as many games as I can and try to get a few goals and assists in there as well.”

His college team mate Clarke also recently re-signed for Kevin Doherty’s side for the 2022 season after originally joining the club from Shamrock Rovers at the start of the 2019 season.

Re-signings were also announced at the club for goalkeeper Colin McCabe, midfielder Luke Heeney, playmaker Darragh Markey and recently appointed skipper Dane Massey.
