Bohemians defender Rob Cornwall is heading stateside next season to ply his trade with USL League One side Northern Colorado Hailstorm.

Managed by former League of Ireland striker Eamon Zayed, the Hailstorm are a newly created team in what is the third tier of soccer in America.

They will play their home matches in the 6,500-seat main stadium of the Future Legends Complex in Windsor, Colorado.

“I’m absolutely delighted to announce Rob Cornwall as the first player signing in Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC history,” said head coach Éamon Zayed.

“Rob epitomises what we are trying to build here: he has an unrelenting winning mentality, he has an unparalleled work ethic.

“He has the burning ambition to win trophies and bring titles to the Northern Colorado community. He sets the tone for the team, and is a leader we will be able to build a championship contender around.”

The 27-year-old Cornwall said that he was “delighted to be signed and to be a part of this new exciting club, and I’m looking forward and feeling motivated for the challenges ahead."

Cornwall began his professional career with Shelbounre back in 2013 before moving to Shamrock Rovers where he was a teammate during Zayed’s short and disappointing spell at Tallaght Stadium.

Cornwall had a stint in 2015 on loan with Derry City and, having made 51 first team appearances for Rovers’ first team across three seasons, he moved permanently for Bohemians for the start of the 2017 campaign.

He was stalwart in Keith Long’s side over the last five seasons, skippering the Gypsies on a number of occasions, helping Bohs qualify for Europe for 2021 where they made it through three rounds in Europe (winning all three home games played in the Aviva Stadium).

There was disappointment in his final game for Bohs as they lost out in the FAI Cup Final, losing on penalties to St. Patrick’s Athletic.
