Hoops sign duo, but appeal is lodged

Shamrock Rovers announced the double signing of midfielders Chris Turner and Craig Walsh on Friday, but there may be complications with Turner's deal.

Turner had agreed to join Sligo Rovers after enjoying a superb season with Dundalk last term, where he scored 12 goals. However, it has been reported there was a problem with his paperwork that meant he was still considered a free agent.

Sligo believed that he was their player and have appealed to the FAI to look into the situation after Shamrock Rovers attempted to register him as a new signing.

"The FAI today received a request from Shamrock Rovers to register Chris Turner ahead of the 2010 season," read an FAI statement.

"However, the player's contractual situation is disputed by a second club and the FAI will not be in a position to register the player until this issue has been resolved.

"The FAI has today written to the clubs involved seeking a speedy resolution of the matter."

Both teams will hope the matter can be cleared up hastily as they step up their training ahead of the 2010 campaign.

One player who will definitely be appearing at the Tallaght Stadium this year is Walsh, who recently featured in the Football's Next Star programme on Sky One.

The former Cherry Orchard player will join fellow new signings Enda Stevens, James Chambers and Billy Dennehy in pre-season training at Carton House next month.
