Mahon expecting a UCD win
Despite currently being second from bottom with just four points, UCD manager Pete Mahon is confident that his side can pick up full points at Tolka Park on Friday night when they take on Shamrock Rovers.
There’s a strong argument to be made that UCD’s performances so far this season haven't brought the results they should have. Their only win to date came in week two, when they defeated Bray by two goals to nil at the Carlisle Grounds. Mahon believes a second win could be on the cards - "I'm expecting to win. I see know reason why we shouldn't and it's about time we beat Rovers."
Mahon will have a full strength squad to choose from. Left back Ian Bermingham has recovered fully from the groin strain that caused him to miss the last three games. Killian Gallagher filled in during his absence and for the most part was impressive - however he did give away two penalties, against Cork and then last week against Drogheda.
Derek Doyle made his long awaited come back last week when he came on midway through the second half. He will be pushing for a place in the starting line up. Alan McNally will also be hoping to start. McNally was on the bench last week as Mahon decided to go with Brian King and Ronan Finn in midfield. When he was introduced as a second half substitute, it was as a centre back alongside Connor Kenna in place of Brian Shortall.
Striker Paul Byrne was dominant in the air against Drogheda last week. He is expected to start upfront again - probably alongside Timmy Purcell.
UCD will be action again on Monday night when they host St Pat's in the second round of the eircom League Cup.
