Mervue congratulate Cunningham on City debut
Former Mervue Utd player Greg Cunningham made his Manchester City debut on Sunday afternoon in their fourth round 4-2 FA Cup win over Scunthorpe. Greg came on at half time for the injured Nigel De Jong and acquitted himself well in the game which was shown live on Setanta Ireland.
Greg along with his twin brother, Dan, who is still playing with Mervue, were part of the SFAI Goodson Cup winning team back in 2006. Greg also scored Mervue’s only goal in the final against Crumlin Utd while that team also captured a record five cups that season under the management of Jaralth Connolly, Dave Mulally and Jimmy Howley. Greg was also named player of the year in that record winning side and signed for Manchester City when he turned sixteen with Newcastle, Aston Villa and Spurs all looking to sign him at the time.
Well done to Greg and his parents, Billy and Linda and his brothers Dan and Stephen, who also played for the Mervue Junior’s in their 3-2 fourth round FAI Junior cup win over Oranmore yesterday. Hopefully there will be many more appearances to follow in the future.
