As the season begins in earnest this week with the first set of pre season fixtures to take place Drogheda United will be the focus of an RTE feature as a number of fans will be lending their services to the cash strapped Boynesiders in an attempt to fix up the clubhouse.

A recent meeting of Drogheda aficionados garnered a lot of local interest in helping rejuvenate the ailing club house and facilities at United Park with local trades people getting involved.

Drogheda United have announced their preseason fixtures which begin this Thursday night as the Boynesiders welcome First Division favourites Shelbourne.

The tie will be the first of six preseason warm ups for the Boynesiders, the pick of the preseason as always is the annual Jim Malone cup which sees Drogheda face local rivals Dundalk on the 16th of Febuary. This season’s fixture taking place at Oriel Park with a time yet to be confirmed. Dundalk will be seeking revenge for the penalty defeat they suffered in last seasons meeting in this annual challenge match. However Drogheda can get a head start on the season as they failed to beat their rivals in all competitive games last year.

Apart from the trip to Oriel Drogheda will be at home for the rest of their warm up games. Monaghan travel to the Louth venue on Friday 5th of Feb followed by Athlone on the 20th of February and Bray’s visit to Drogheda on the 28th will complete the round of warm ups.

All games kicking off at 7.45pm with tickets costing a mere €7 for adults and €5 for concessions with children under 12 going free.

Drogheda will also face a Celtic IX at United Park on the Wednesday 3rd of Febuary with Celtic great Neil Lennon expecting to bring a strong side to face the Drogs. Tickets for this high profile clash go on sale this Thursday and will be available at the Shelbourne game. With a number of Celtic first teamers slowly coming back from injury there is the chance of seeing some of the SPL's finest in action in the intimate settings of United Park.

The fixtures will give Alan Mathews a chance to properly asses his new acquisitions along with some of the younger players who threatened to break into the first team last season among those being Eoghan Osborne and William Woods.
