Guthrie and Byrne join Saints

St. Patrick’s Athletic have today announced the signing of two new players, striker Paul Byrne and defender Shane Guthrie. 23 year-old Byrne joins having spent last season with Bray Wanderers. The Firhouse native has worked with Pat’s manager Pete Mahon before, having spent four seasons at Mahon’s former charges, UCD.

The former Cherry Orchard youngster, who also has an Ireland under-19 call-up, is looking forward to the challenge ahead. “My aim is to break into the first team and then to challenge for every competition that Pat’s are in this season”, Byrne stated. Pat’s fans will remember his winning goal against their club at the Carlisle Grounds last season and their new striker is hoping that all is now forgiven, “hopefully they won’t hold that against me”, added Byrne.

25 year-old central defender Shane Guthrie also joins Mahon’s new-look Pat’s side. The former Galway man has represented Ireland at both under-19 and under-23 level. “I knew John Gill from my time at Cork and also when he was involved with the Under-23 squad so I was delighted to get a call from him and Pete about joining Pat’s”, said Guthrie. The new boy was also reminded of the opening game of last season, where his Galway side beat Pat’s 3-0 at Richmond Park. “Hopefully I can play a part in turning results like that around but really I’m just looking forward now to getting back to training, securing my place in the team and then helping Pat’s to win matches”.

There’s been even more good news for Pat’s today, with the announcement that the club are to be awarded the Matchday Management Team of the Year. Representatives of the club will attend an event at FAI headquarters in Abbotstown on Friday, January 15th, where the announcement will be made official.

The Matchday Management Team of the Year award pays tribute to the behind-the-scenes work involved in staging League of Ireland fixtures. The award was decided based on FAI Match Delegates reports throughout the season and takes into account issues such as stewarding, stadium environment and application towards match day management training.
