Drogheda add three more to squad
Drogheda United have announced the signings of three new players for their assault on the 2010 season. Shelbourne’s former captain Damien Brennan has agreed a move to United Park along with former Shamrock Rovers right back Corie Treacy and Dundalk’s Michael Daly, the most notable capture for Alan Mathews.
Speaking to the Drogheda Independent Mathews has outlined his desire to further strengthen his sides attacking options in the coming weeks. This comes on the back of reports linking Drogheda to former Bohs hit-man Glen Crowe.
“Our defensive record was the best in the bottom half of the table, I think, but our scoring rate was not great and that's something we will try and rectify.
"We have spoken to Glen and indicated what role we would like him to take. He is a fit lad and a proven goalscorer who was maybe on the periphery of things at Bohs last year.
"Older players can bring out the best in others and help the youngsters, and if he decides to come, great,” said the Drogheda manager. As well as Crowe, Mathews is looking to another former league great as he is hoping to attract Jamie Harris to the North East.
The makeshift striker would offer Drogheda options in both defence and attack, deepening the options within the squad, something which was distinctly lacking in the earlier part of the season last year.
As well as the capture of three new players and the possible signing of Crowe, Drogheda have been boosted by the news that seven of last year’s squad have put pen to paper in new deals for the forthcoming season.
Drogheda Player's Player of the Year Connor Kenna as well as captain Alan McNally have both extended their contracts along with Paul Skinner, Jamie Duffy, Paul Crowley, Brendan McGill, and Eric McGill.
So far James Chambers and Paul Shiels are the only members of the 2009 squad to leave United Park, signing for Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne respectively.
