Drogheda v Bray: The Story so Far

Credit:

Drogheda United and Bray Wanderers face off on Tuesday night in what will be the sixth meeting of the sides this season in all competitions. So far it is advantage to Drogheda; the Boynesiders have recorded three wins to Bray’s single victory. However form stands for nothing on Tuesday night in a winner take all game so the current form book will be tossed out the window. But if you do feel that form has some part to play then here is a synopsis of the Drogheda v Bray saga this season. It all began back in March and ironically Friday the 13th.

Drogheda United 0 – 0 Bray Wanderers: 13th March
Alan Mathews newly formed Drogheda side picked up their first point of the season with a battling performance at home to the Seagulls. Efforts from Gavin Whelan and James Chambers almost granted the home side a first win, but the Boynesiders couldn’t breach what proved to be a very resolute Bray defence. Eddie Gormely’s men demonstrated some of the defensive strength that would be a feature of their play throughout the season.

Bray Wanderers 0 – 2 Drogheda United: 13th April – EA Sports Cup
Drogheda secured their first competitive win of the season with a trip to the Carlisle Grounds. A somewhat reserve Drogheda side took to the pitch, debuts being handed to several underage players. Second half strikes from James Chambers and Brian King secured Drogheda’s passage to the second round of the cup. In truth it was a comfortable win for the visitors. William Woods was unlucky not to mark his debut with a goal after he was deemed to be offside.

The home side failed to dominate in a very below par performance, however they had made nine changes to their starting eleven handing out several debuts. Colm Tresson making a goal line block the high point of the Seagulls play.

Bray Wanderers 0 – 1 Drogheda United: 8th May
Another trip to the Carlisle Grounds and another win for Drogheda as Brian King secured all three points with a 31st minute goal. A dominant Drogheda first half performance saw them go in ahead at the break, but Bray did show their resilience in the second half. Patrick Kavanagh almost levelled matters on 51 minutes, but when the home side were reduced to ten men, Chris Deans being red carded with 19 minutes remaining, the points were all but secure.

Bray did score but unlucky for them was the fact that Derek Foran was penalised for fouling Steve Williams in the build up to his goal thus keeping Bray scoreless.

Drogheda United 1 – 2 Bray Wanderers: 17th July
Bray put an end to Drogheda’s impressive six game unbeaten run with a 2-1 win, their first over the Boynesiders all season. A calamitous Ian Ryan OG opened the scoring before Bray doubled their advantage through Gary McCabe. Shane Barrett pegged a goal back from the penalty spot before half time but Drogheda could find no way through the Bray defence. Guy Bates, having just re-signed for the club, was introduced at half time but couldn’t add to his memorable 2007 strike despite hassling Pender at left back.

Bray Wanderers 1 – 2 Drogheda United : 25th September
The most recent meeting of the sides produced an epic finish as James Chambers netted with literally the last kick of the game to give Drogheda a massive win and all but consign Bray to automatic relegation. In what was a very scrappy game Drogheda took the lead on 75 minutes as Jamie Duffy netted but Dane Massey looked to have secured a share of the spoils for Bray when on 89 minutes he beat Steve Williams.
