League Report: Treaty United 2 - 1 UCD
Michael Cooke reports from the Markets Field
Two goals from Jack Lynch saw Treaty United defeat UCD 2-1 at the Markets Field on Friday night.
Lynch’s opener was cancelled out by Colm Whelan’s penalty shortly after half-time before the Treaty skipper replied with the decisive goal moments later.
The game’s first chance fell to Treaty on three minutes when Mark Ludden's corner found Charlie Fleming who's header was deflected behind the goal line.
Mid-way through the half the Students could have taken the lead when Colm Whelan latched onto Paul Doyle’s free kick only for his close-range header to be deflected out for a corner.
Chances were scarce in the opening exchanges, and it became inevitable that a moment of creative innovation would engineer an early advantage.
Marc Ludden is often the embodiment of same and the Treaty full-back lived up to his calling card on 28 minutes.
His superb delivery from the half-way line played in captain Jack Lynch and his delightful header broke the deadlock.
UCD found the hosts hard to break down in the first half and the visitors couldn’t manage an equaliser before half-time and found themselves trailing 1-0 at the interval.
Parity was restored nine minutes upon resumption when UCD were awarded a penalty after Liam Kerrigan was adjudged fouled inside the box.
Colm Whelan duly fired home the resulting spot-kick as the division’s top scorer bagged his 12th goal of the season.
Treaty only needed three minutes to restore their one-goal cushion though and yet again it was Lynch who delivered the goods.
He fired home his second goal of the night after he was beautifully set up by Matt Keane’s splendid cross from the right.
Treaty subsequently had two quickfire chances on 79 minutes when a long-range effort from substitute Clyde O'Connell hit the post and the rebound fell to Matt Keane who's effort was deflected out for a corner.
UCD show little attacking threat until Liam Kerrigan tried his luck from the edge of the box deep into injury time but his effort sailed over.
Treaty ran out 2-1 winners after approximately 95 minutes of action and sent temperatures soaring on an already sunny evening on Shannonside.
