Wexford Youths -v- Mervue United
Mervue Utd travel to Ferrycarrig Park (kick-off 7.45 p.m.)to take on Wexford Youths for their final fixture of the club’s first season in the League of Ireland. Although this is not Wexford’s final game with them still to play sixth placed Monaghan Utd next Tuesday, as that game was called off twice in the past week.
Mervue effectively secured their status in the First Division when they defeated bottom club Kildare County five games back while Wexford who have won three of their last four, look to have secured a fifth spot finish.
Mervue will be looking to finish the season on a positive winning note but travel south with a very depleted squad with three players suspended and numerous injuries and defections for Johnny Glynn to contend with.
Pat Hoban and Nicky Curran will not featured following their sending offs in last weeks 4-1 defeat by Sporting Fingal while Alex Lee is also serving a suspension for his sending off against UCD. Nigel Keady (work commitments), Rynal Browne (flu), while captain Damien O’Rourke and Evan Connolly remain out injured. Johnny Glynn has been forced to call up some of the club’s under 17 players for the game to complete his squad.
Mick Wallace’s side on the other hand will also be without some influential players as Conor Sinnott and David Breen, who got the winner in Wexford’s 1-0 win over Mervue when the sides met back in May, will both sit this one out due to suspension.
In their two previous meetings this season Wexford defeated Mervue 1-0 at home in May while the two sides played out a dour 0-0 scoreless draw in Terryland Park back in late August. That was Mervue’s only scoreless draw of the season as there have been goals in every other game they have featured in this season.
With Wexford having more to play for as they try to fend off a Monaghan side three points behind them and the two sides still to play each other, a win for the home side will see them a lot closer to that fifth placed finish.
Mervue on the other hand have little to play for but a win combined with Athlone losing away to Sporting Fingal would see them finish in tenth position.
