Finn looks for strong season finish
UCD captain Ronan Finn insists despite having nothing to play for UCD will be looking to win and finish the season on a high against Waterford United on Saturday night.
“I hope there will be a big crowd there, maybe some older UCD fans will come back and I’m sure some of the lad’s families will be there, I know mine will. I think Martin (Russell) will put out a strong eleven to go and finish the season off well.”
Finn has also been nominated for Young Player of the Year and First Division Player of the Year. He will come up against Bohs duo Conor Powell and Gary Deegan for young player of the year and faces competition from Shels' Dave McAllister and ex-UCD player Conan Byrne for First Division Player of the Year.
“It’s a nice surprise, After having great success with the team it’s nice to get a bit of personal recognition, I’m delighted,” insisted Finn.
Looking forward to next season, Finn believes The Students have every chance of doing well next season were they will be competing in the Premier Division for the first time following their relegation at the end of 2008 season.
“I think we have a very strong squad. Maybe we will sign a few players but when we’ve played premier opposition this season I think we’ve done well. I’m looking forward to playing in the Premier Division and it will be great to get back, that’s where I want to be playing.”
Finn, who has been an integral part in insuring UCD came straight back up following their relegation from the Premier Division last season and was named captain at the beginning of this season by manager Martin Russell,
“It’s something I’m really looking forward to. I was delighted to be named captain at the start of the season, it’s something I didn’t expect, but with our squad being so young and me being around for the last six seasons at UCD, it was nice to get the captaincy.”
