Russell looking to finish season in style

After being relegated a year ago from the Premier Division, UCD manager Martin Russell has managed to regroup and win the First Division title with a game to spare.

Russell’s side did what needed to be done last week with an emphatic five nil win over Athlone Town, but the former Pat’s midfielder admitted his surprise on hearing the scoreline from Tolka Park.

“Longford did the business for us, we’d never have thought that that scoreline would have been true, but that’s football. We had to do our business too and it was a great performance in Athlone, we’re delighted to go up as champions.”

UCD can equal the First Division points record, set by Cobh in 2007, with a win and, while inevitably his attention is turned slightly towards next year’s Premier Division campaign, Russell isn’t letting his concentration slip until the season is over.

“We’ll be looking to finish off the season in style, to play well and we know we have what it takes. We have some planning to do for the top division as well but we’ll enjoy that when it comes.”

UCD face Waterford United on Saturday night in their final game of the season.
