Pete Mahon arrived to the press room looking tired but hugely content with his evening’s work and freely admitted he had found watching his St.Patrick’s Athletic’s one nil victory over Shamrock Rovers tough going.

“That was a real rollercoaster of a match; I went through every emotion there from the first minute to the last. It’s what League of Ireland football is all about.”

Adding: “Two committed teams, it was a really, really hard ninety minutes for us but at the end we came out on top and I’m really, really pleased.”

Mahon also took time out to state his appreciation for the boisterous Richmond Park crowd; “(There was a) Good crowd, great night for football.”

Mahon went on to say that he thinks the Pat’s players only truly began to realise that they were in a serious relegation battle when trailing one nil after half an hour away to Drogheda United seven days ago: “I think it (the penny) dropped after about half an hour last week in Drogheda, we were very poor and then for some strange reason things started to click and (we) started to play well.”

When questioned as to whether or not he was hoping stay on as manager for next season Mahon was understandably non committal: “I’ll have to wait and see, I’m not even going to think about it, I’m going to just enjoy the night and enjoy the moment and see what tomorrow brings.”

Tomorrow will bring the former UCD boss a multitude of positive headlines and good feeling for what was a job: “really, really” well done.
