Mahon - It's not over yet
Pete Mahon managed to cover just about every conceivable angle in his pre-match comments as he attempts to gear up his St. Patrick’s Athletic side for what he hopes will be their final game of 2009 League of Ireland Premier Division season against league runners up Shamrock Rovers at Richmond Park on Friday night.
Mahon is only too aware that his team are reliant on results going his way elsewhere in the Saint’s attempts to avoid the relegation play offs but is totally focused on beating the men from Tallaght and will worry about what happens at The Showgrounds or Terryland Park afterwards:
“A win might not be enough for us as it depends what happens between Galway and Cork and in the match between Sligo and Drogheda – there’s been a few twists and turns over this league campaign and it’s not over yet.”
Before adding his awareness of the difficulty his team face in achieving a win against Friday’s formidable opponents:
“We will just have to focus on the game in hand and try and do our bit but we know Rovers won’t be easy. This season has been a great success for them, once they’re got over the initial disappointment of missing out on the league I think they will really want to finish on a high so we’re in for quite a game.”
The caretaker boss does however feel that his players are going in to the game in a relatively healthy vein of form: “After the first thirty minutes against Drogheda last week I thought we were the better team, and especially so in the second half. That’s the benchmark and standard of play we need to attain tomorrow night to give us any chance of getting the result we need”
Come a quarter to eight Friday night all the talking will have stopped and the ninety minutes that unfold in Inchicore, Galway and Sligo will determine whether or not Mahon and co manage to avoid the play off places.
