Blues re-sign six for 2010 season
Waterford United have moved quickly to tie down current players to new deals, with all six players extending their current deals, while hoping to re-sign more players in the coming days.
With the season coming to a close this weekend, Stephen Henderson has already begun the building process as the Blues will look again to promotion after missing out this season.
Local players Willie John Kiely, Vinny Sullivan and Kevin Burns along with Cork based trio of John Kearney, Seamas Long and Alan Carey, have all agreed one year extensions.
Kearney and Carey joined from Cobh Ramblers at the beginning of the season, while Long joined from Douglas Hall. All three players have played in the Blues back line this season, with Kearney and Long also performing admirably in midfield.
Kiely and Sullivan will look to score the goals that will end the Waterford’s recent time in the first division. Kiely grabbed 11 league goals this season, while Sullivan scoring four in the league since returning during the July transfer window.
Young goalkeeper Kevin Burns is the 6th to put pen to paper on a new deal to remain with the club for another season. Although Burns spent most of the season in Michael Devine’s shadow, he came to the fore during Waterford’s cup semi final defeat to Sligo, producing a number of superb saves, to show the undoubted talent the youngster holds.
“Following on from Stephen Henderson’s extending of his rolling contract for another year, to the end of the 2010 season, Waterford United are delighted to reveal that the boss has already been busy with preparations for next year’s title challenge,” a club statement read.
“To that end, six players have today extended their current contracts and agreed terms for another season, taking them up to the end of 2010. Those players are Kevin Burns, Seamus Long, Alan Carey, John Kearney, Willie John Kiely and Vinny Sullivan.”
“Henderson is hoping to tie up the other members of the squad in the next day or two.”
