‘First Division is UCD’s to lose’ - Buckley
Liam Buckley feels that, with just two games remaining in the League of Ireland First Division, the automatic promotion slot is league leaders UCD’s to lose.
Fingal sit second in the league at the moment, ahead of their FAI Ford Cup Semi-Final tomorrow afternoon, knowing that should they win their remaining games they will more than likely face Shelbourne in the play-off for promotion.
“Obviously with UCD’s results, the First Division is theirs to lose, but second and third place are important for us,” he said.
Waterford United’s recent loss of form has paved the way for a Shels v Fingal play-off, with Stephen Henderson’s side dropping eight points in the last four league games. However, Buckley maintains that United have had a successful year to date.
“[Waterford] have had a terrific season though, they did well getting to a cup final and a semi final already,” he said.
Sporting won on Tuesday night, beating Athlone Town 2-1 and thereby keeping their slim chances of automatic promotion alive and Buckley remains upbeat about the progress his side have made in such a short space of time, and admitted he was happier with the win over Athlone than the performance.
“I was happy with bits. We gave away a silly penalty to let them back in it though. We are coming to the end of the season now, with the cup tomorrow, so it’s looking bright.”
