Trophy up for grabs in Sligo

Galway United travel to Sligo for an intriguing first Connacht Derby of the new season on Saturday night. Although both sets of supporters will argue about how season-defining this tie may prove to be, and while it may be action packed and draw a large crowd to the Showgrounds, there will be no silverware on offer.

No cup, no plate, no memorial to adorn the trophy cabinet of either club. Only league points will be on offer.

The same cannot be said for a fixture which takes place earlier in the day at the Sligo venue. At 3.30pm the supporters of both clubs will face off for the 2nd annual Connacht Supporters Trust Cup game. Played on the astroturf surface at Rovers home pitch, the Sligo fans will be hoping to retain the trophy they won following a narrow victory last year. While the game will be fiercely competitive, the main aim of this fixture is for fans of both clubs to get together for some food and a few light refreshments afterwards and enjoy the banter in the lead up to the game.

It is a fine example of the type of camaraderie that should be fostered among eircom League clubs, and credit goes to all those involved in the organisation of this event.

Some decent skills may also be on show for anyone passing the area. A player from last year's event went onto represent his country this year. Answers on a postcard please.
