Longford Town have signed former Shamrock Rovers player Aaron Bolger on loan from Cardiff City.

“Aaron is a really exciting signing for our club,” said Longford manager Daire Doyle. “He has been involved at first team level since he was 16 at Shamrock Rovers and earned a move to Cardiff.

“When the opportunity to bring Aaron in came up we were delighted to be able to get the deal done. We look forward to him showing everyone what he is capable of this season!”

Bolger turns 21 next week and said he is “really looking forward to get going. After speaking to Daire over the phone and his ambitions for the season, it was something that really impressed me.

“I’ve always liked the way Longford played having played against them in the past. They like to get the ball down and play football and that suits my game so I can’t wait to get back doing what I love and helping the club get results.”

Bolger played his schoolboy football with St. Joseph Boys before joining the Shamrock Rovers academy in 2016 making 16 under-age appearances before Stephen Bradley handed him his first team debut as a 16-year-old against Cork City in the FAI Cup in September 2016.

Overall he made 36 competitive appearances for the Hoops – 24 in the league – scoring once in a 4-1 win over Drogheda United in 2017. The midfielder joined Cardiff initially on loan in February 2019 and was playing with the club’s under-23 side before signing permanently in July that year.

However, Bolger returned to the Hoops last season on loan from Cardiff playing with Rovers’ First Division team making 11 appearances.

Longford have also signed Aaron Robinson from Bluebell. “I'm really happy to bring Aaron in,” said Doyle about signing Robinson.

“He's a player I've known since his days as a youngster at Shelbourne. We have been keeping an eye on his progress with Bluebell where he has been an outstanding player for them.

“We had the opportunity to bring Aaron in and look forward to him competing for a place in our side. He is a committed and talented footballer with great communication skills and will add greatly to our group.”
