Former Republic of Ireland international Stephen Quinn has joined the Irish contingent at Mansfield Town on loan until the summer.

34-year-old Quinn has been a regular in League One for Burton Albion this season, making 22 league appearances, but has opted to go down a league to spearhead the Stags’ promotion push.

Nigel Clough’s side are currently 12th in League Two but have won their last four games on the bounce and only narrowly bowed out of the FA Cup to Cheltenham Town.

Quinn joins a substantial cohort of Irishmen at the club, where Corey O’Keeffe, Ryan Sweeney, Harry Charsley, Stephen McLaughlin, Aaron O’Driscoll and James Clarke are established.

The midfielder, who appeared 18 times for Ireland and was part of the squad that appeared at Euro 2016, was previously signed by Clough at Burton in 2018.

Dubliner Quinn signed for Sheffield United as a teenager from St Patrick’s Athletic and played for both the Blades and Hull City in the Premier League before moving to Reading.

“We’ve worked with Stephen for 18 months or so. He’s a very experienced player,” Clough told the club’s official website.

“I’m not sure if people realise or not, but if James Perch, Andy Cook or Nicky Maynard don’t start, we don’t have an outfield player over 30 years of age.

“So that type of experience in the midfield area will be useful for us between now and the end of the season.”
