Scottish Premiership Round-up: Rangers and Celtic score big wins as Gers stay top

A resounding 5-1 victory over Motherwell secured Rangers’ place at the top of the Scottish Premier League.

Two penalties from JAmes Tavernier, a brace from Cedric Itten and a goal from Jordan Jones secured the resounding victory for Steven Gerrard’s side.

Gerrard heaped praise on his players after the game, saying: “I was pleased with my leaders today because they kept the standards up throughout the 90 minutes”.

“I thought we were strong throughout. I'm pleased for Cedric to get a couple of goals, it'll do his confidence the world of good.”

Celtic also recorded a comfortable 3-0 win over Hibernian to keep up the pressure on the league leaders, who have played a game extra.

The scoreline was something of a surprise as Hibs had been in great form this season, holding Rangers to a draw last week and trailing Celtic by two points going into the game.

Goals from Callum McGregor, Albian Ajeti and Mohamed Elyounoussi secured all three points for Celtic, who remain a point behind Rangers with a game in hand.

Neil Lennon remarked that it was Celtic’s best performance of the season, and one of the best ever during his reign.

“It was a good test for us, and I thought we came through it with flying colours. It was a brilliant team performance, absolutely brilliant,” he said.

Aberdeen were comfortable 3-0 winners away to ten-man Ross County. Marley Watkins opened The Dons’ account shortly before half-time.

Iain Vigurs saw red for the Rossies on the hour mark and Lewis Ferguson slotted home two penalties to wrap up the win.

Livingston have moved off the bottom thanks to a 2-0 victory over St Johnstone, thanks to goals from Scott Tiffoney and Alan Forrest.

St. Mirren slip down to 12th on goal difference thanks to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Kilmarnock, Nicke Kabamba with the goal.

And Dundee United recorded a 1-1 draw away to Hamilton, as Lawrence Shankland’s fourth-minute opener was cancelled out late on by the home side’s Hakeem Odoffin.
