League Report: Sligo Rovers 0 - 1 Bohemians

An Andre Wright goal ten minutes from time gave Bohemians their first win in three games at the expense of Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds on Friday night.

Keith Long made four changes to his Bohs team that were beaten 2-0 by Waterford at Dalymount Park last week.

James Talbot, Rob Cornwall, Dawson Devoy and Conor Levingston all came into the team with Stephen McGuinness, James Finnerty, JJ Lunney and Daniel Madroiu dropping out.

Liam Buckley made just one change for Sligo from last week’s scoreless draw with St Pat’s, as Garry Buckley came into midfield for the suspended Niall Morahan.

It was the visitors who started the faster and they nearly took the lead after five minutes when Lewis Banks’ poor clearance fell for Kris Twardek.

The Canadian winger played in Dawson Devoy, but his effort wasn’t strong enough to beat McGinty who clawed the ball out of the bottom corner.

A couple of minutes later, Bohs had a penalty shout, as Teeemu Penninkangas tried to clear a cross into the box.

At first it looked like it came off his head, but on closer inspection it definitely came off his outstretched arm. However, referee Rob Hennessy wasn’t interested and waved play on.

Bohs continued to create chances and nearly took the lead through Danny Grant after 13 minutes.

Twardek played a low ball across the box and Grant tried to stab the ball in from close range, but Kyle McFadden did well to get back and clear the ball off the line to keep the game goalless.

Sligo had their first chance shortly afterward as Will Seymore headed Cawley’s corner safely wide from ten yards out

Bohs should have taken the lead when Anto Breslin’s cross found Buckley, who laid the ball off for Grant. He found Wright, who stabbed wide at the far post when he really should’ve scored.

Bohs had more chances to take the lead. McFadden did well once more to block a Grant effort from close range before Keith Buckley flashed an effort over from long range seconds later.

The away side continued to make chances and almost went in front just before the break, as Dan Casey saw his goalbound header blocked by Junior before Levingston chipped the rebound narrowly wide of the far post.

Sligo came out for the second half rejuvenated and started well. Four minutes into the half, Buckley managed to get to the bye-line before playing in a low cross that Talbot did well to claim.

Seconds later, Ronan Coughlan had a great chance to put Liam Buckley’s side in front, as Lewis Banks’ corner came of his shoulder before being caught by Talbot. If he had made a better connection Sligo would’ve been in front.

A minute later, Bohs had a chance of their own, as Wright headed Breslin’s cross over from ten yards.

Sligo would have another chance just after the hour mark, as Junior played in Coughlan, but the ex-Cork City man, who is usually reliable in front of goal, dragged the ball from just inside the box.

The forward would have another chance moments later as he twisted and turned before curling a shot over from the edge of the box.

Wright came close to giving Bohs the lead after 66 minutes, as after being found by Dawson Devoy, he saw his effort palmed onto the post by Sligo net-minder McGinty who managed to claim the rebound.

Devoy and Wright would combine again, ten minutes from time, and this time it would lead to a goal.

Buckley played a ball to Devoy on the right side of the box. He then floated a lovely ball to Wright who volleyed past McGinty at the far post.

Coughlan had a chance to level matters for the Bit o’ Red one minute from time, as he fired over Talbot’s cross-bar from close range after Cawley’s corner, and Bohs held on to win.
