New Galway boss John Caulfield - The immediate goal is to get out of the First Division

New Galway United manager John Caulfield was introduced to the media for the first time in the Shearwater Hotel on Monday.

Caulfield is a manger with great pedigree in the League of Ireland, having managed Cork City for six years.

He guided his old side to  a League of Ireland Premier Division title and two FAI cups during his time at the club.

The new United boss left Cork City in May 2019 and is now excited to start his new role, succeeding Alan Murphy.

Today, Caulfield’s new ideas were brought to the table, as he faced the press for the first time as Galway manager having joined the club three days ago.

Caulfield opened his press conference by stating that he is “really excited to be involved with Galway." and “always saw Galway as a sleeping giant.”

He emphasised his desire to “release the potential of the club.”

He wants “massive support, everyone to work together and crucially for the city and the county of Galway I intend to get people back involved and to support the club.”

“There has been a lot said about my past but that’s history. Today is the day I start working 24/7 for Galway, doing everything in my power to develop a successful team.”

Caulfield continued by saying he has ‘great optimism’ for the challenge ahead and hopes he “can deliver on that”. He felt “the buzz” was back after taking some time out to “recharge the batteries”.

When asked about the aims he has for his new club, Caulfield was clear in his ambition to “restructure” and “rebuild”.  He emphasized the fact that “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think I could bring success to the club”. His main objective is for everyone to be “positive”.

The new man at the helm also confirmed Colin Fortune and Johnny Glynn will be part of his backroom team. He acknowledged the work being done by Johnny Glynn at the Academy level.

Caulfield was passionate about the need for the club “to be a home-grown team even though I’m coming from the outside.”

The Galway boss then outlined his goals for the next two seasons. The immediate goal is to get out of the First division.

He is aware that he “will be judged on his results” but “if you work hard you have a chance”.

Caulfield described the style of play he wants to bring to his new side. He wants a team that plays “exciting football that creates chances and scores goals, hopefully not conceding goals”.

“You build a team around the players you have.” which will dictate the system Caulfield ultimately plays.

His main philosophy is to play with “high energy and high intensity.”

Caulfield finished his press conference by saying “my job is to go in and be positive, lift the players and motivate the team.”

The new manager looks to be a very promising appointment by Galway United and his first game in charge will be against Shelbourne at home in the FAI cup on Friday night.
