Katie McCabe's Arsenal bow out of the Champions League as Paris Saint-Germain set up all-French semi with holders Lyon
Katie McCabe’s Champions League journey came to an end at the quarter-final stage as her Arsenal side were beaten 2-1 by Paris Saint-Germain in Saint Sebastien.
The Republic of Ireland captain played 89 minutes as the French side proved too strong from the Gunners in the tie, which was reduced to one leg due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Goals from Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Signe Bruun, either side of Beth Mead’s equaliser, set up an all-French semi-final for Paris with defending champions Olympique Lyonnais.
Lyon eased past German side Bayern Munchen by an identical scoreline in the other semi-final in Bilbao thanks to goals from England international Nikita Parris and Amel Majri.
Arsenal travelled to the Basque Country in confident mood despite the early cancellation of the Women’s Super League leaving them third and without an automatic qualification spot.
They were outgunned by France’s perennial runners-up, however, and trailed from the 15th minute when French international Katoto volleyed home from a corner.
Nadia Nadim swung a low corner in towards the near post, where Katoto had shaken marker Leah Williamson and guided the ball beautifully, first-time, into the bottom corner.
Arsenal equalised in controversial fashion six minutes before the break when Mead, returning from an offside position, took Kim Little’s pass and curled her shot past Christiane Endler.
PSG, who were beaten by Lyon in the French League Cup final 12 days ago, continued to dominate in the second half and had a number of chances to regain the lead.
Goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger had kept her side in the tie by denying Katoto a second after the livewire striker broke through one-on-one.
It wasn’t to be, however, and it was substitute Bruun who scored the all-important goal 13 minutes from time, just four minutes after her introduction for debutante Ramona Bachermann.
The Swiss international took a pass from the game’s outstanding player, Katoto, and poked home for what would prove to be the winner.
Things were more straightforward for Lyon in Bilbao as a goal in either half gave them a commanding 2-0 lead before Carolin Simon scored against her old club to set up a tense finish.
Parris opened the scoring four minutes before the break, bravely putting her body on the line to head home before being cleaned out by Bayern keeper Laura Benkarth.
Majri doubled the lead with a perfectly-placed free kick just before the hour and, though Simon saw her free kick deflected home minutes later, Lyon closed the game out.
On Friday, German champions Wolfsburg won 9-1 against part-timers Glasgow City to set up a semi with last year’s finalists Barcelona, who beat Atletico Madrid thanks to Kheira Hamraoui’s late goal.
