Barcelona sack manager Quique Setien following Champions League humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich

Barcelona have sacked manager Quique Setién just hours after the Catalans were put to the sword by a rampant Bayern Munich in their Champions League quarter-final tie in Lisbon.

The former Real Betis manager departs after just half a season in charge, having replaced Erneste Valverde in mid-January and signing a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Barca surrendered their La Liga crown to Real Madrid last month, however, and the manner of their collapse at the Estadio da Luz proved the final straw.

Bayern cruised into the semi-finals with a merciless 8-2 win that will put potential semi-final opponents Manchester City and Olympique Lyonnais on high alert.

Thomas Muller’s brace helped the German champions to a commanding 4-1 lead at the break, while Barcelona loanee Phillipe Coutinho added two late goals to rub salt in the Catalan club’s wounds.

Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski were also on target for Bayern, who conceded to an own goal from defender David Alaba and one from Luis Suarez.

Bayern were in control throughout and hit the front with just over three minutes on the clock when top scorer Lewandowski teed up Muller to scuff a shot past his compatriot Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Within three minutes, Barca were level as a strong run and cross from Jordi Alba on the left forced Alaba to stab a foot at the ball, which looped cruelly over Manuel Neuer in the Bayern goal.

Perisic restored Bayern’s lead midway through the half as he found space in the box before drilling a shot past ter Stegen, who might have done more to keep it out.

A stunning one-touch assist from Leon Goretzka put the third on a plate for Gnabry before Muller showed his predatory instincts to get the first touch on Kimmich’s cross.

The Spanish side settled in the second half and cut the deficit to two when Suarez eked out a yard in the box and finished emphatically.

Bayern weren’t willing to take their foot off their opponents’ throats, however, and full-back Alphonso Davies laid number five on a plate for Kimmich.

Lewandowski extended his place at the top of the goalscoring charts as he nodded home his 14th of the competition eight minutes from time.

Substitute Coutinho showed his parent club what they were missing with two well-taken finishes in four minutes and looked sheepish as he unwittingly sealed Setién’s fate.
