Carey hopes cup win can lift Blues

Waterford United are chasing a cup double and Alan Carey thinks their good form in both the FAI Ford Cup and EA Sports Cup can attract new fans to the club.

The former Cobh Ramblers defender contributed to that excellent run by scoring the opening goal of his side’s 2-0 victory over St Patrick’s Athletic in their FAI Cup quarter-final replay on Tuesday.

With a place in the semi-finals secured and Bohemians set to visit the RSC for the final of the EA Sports Cup, Carey hopes that more supporters will turn out to cheer on The Blues.

Stephen Henderson’s team are currently fourth in the First Division and they will be confident of using their new found swagger in their remaining league fixtures.

“It’s a boost for the club (beating St Pat’s). We haven’t been getting great crowds despite how well we’re doing in the league so hopefully this will get the excitement going around the town,” Carey is quoted as saying by the Irish Examiner.

“We’re delighted with the result. We felt we played well enough on Saturday at the RSC to get the win so we went up there with no fear.

“The league is priority for us but we have struggled lately so actually these games against Pat’s have been a welcome distraction because we’ll transfer all this confidence back into our league games.”
