McNally: We simply need to start winning

Drogheda United captain Alan McNally knows that his team need to start picking up wins if they are to have any chance of climbing away from the foot of the Premier Division table.

Alan Mathews’ side have showed signs of progression in recent games, but time is running out in order to secure their top flight status, so a return to winning ways is top of the their agenda.

Despite this pressure, confidence is high in the Drogheda squad with McNally stating that ‘a win would ease the pressure’ that they are feeling now with just nine league games remaining.

“We know what we have to do and that is to turn our good performances of late into wins. If we can do that then there is a chance of avoiding relegation,” said McNally.

“We feel comfortable playing in front of our own supporters, who often act as the 12th man for us and they give us that extra ten per cent. So if we can win our remaining home games that would be great.

“There is no escaping the fact that it is tight at the bottom of the league, but if Sligo and Bray can go out and beat Bohemians in their last matches, then we should believe that we can get similar results.”

With almost every player in the league out of contract at the end of the season, McNally admits that the players are unsure what lies ahead in the future.

Although the former UCD defender thinks that if Drogheda can survive in the Premier Division then there is a chance of the team staying together for at least another year and building towards a long-term future.

The supporters may have saved the club at the start of the year with their fundraising appeal, but it is now up to the players to ensure that the Boynesiders remain in the top flight and build on the good work that Mathews has done this season.
