Monaghan United -v- Mervue United
Two sides that are winless in September and have lost their last two league games meet at Century Homes Park on Friday night as Monaghan Utd host Mervue Utd with a 8 p.m. kick-off.
After going unbeaten for the month of August, Monaghan have lost all three games so far this month, losing both league games (both 3-0 to Shelbourne and UCD) and bowing out of the FAI Cup after a 1-0 loss to St Pats. Mervue have also lost their last two league games having got back to winning ways against Athlone at the end of August to end an eight game run of losses.
The last time these two sides met in Terryland Park back in June, Monaghan were convincing 5-1 winners and that was the start of a number of bad results for new boys Mervue. Mervue did however record their first win in the League of Ireland First Division when these sides met back in March at Century Homes Park. Goals in either half from Mike Tierney and David Goldbey gave the Galway side a 2-1 historic first win in their first ever League of Ireland campaign.
Both teams seasons have gone in different directions since their last meeting though as Monaghan have strode up the league table following a run of good results and now sit in a comfortable mid table position. Mervue on the other hand have dropped from an early season mid table position to third from bottom following a serious dip in form during the summer months.
Mervue manager Johnny Glynn will have to travel north without the services of Rynal Browne, Nigel Keady, Evan Connolly and David Goldbey while Neil Keane serves the second game of a suspension. Midfielders Gary Traynor and Mixie Harty will both return to the squad after missing last week’s defeat by Finn Harps. Monaghan manager Mick Cooke has doubts over Don Tierney and Conor McMahon while Alan Byrne is definitely out as he serves a ban for reaching 12 yellow cards.
Both sides will be looking to get back on the winning trail on Friday night but it could be a tight game as these sides have shared nine goals in two games so it could also be entertaining. Monaghan have only won three of their eleven home games to date, as six of their nine wins in all have come on the road. Mervue have though won only two of their twelve away games this season, but one was at this venue with the other against Kildare.
Prediction: An exciting entertaining 3-2 home win!!
