Kevin O'Connor signs back for Cork City
Cork City have re-signed left back Kevin O’Connor until the end of the 2020 League of Ireland season.
The Wexford local, who was recently with Waterford FC, signed for the club originally in 2015 and was part of the City team which won the FAI Cup in 2016 and the league title in 2017.
O’Connor had made three appearances for Waterford this season and scored one goal for the Blues in a 2-0 defeat of St. Patricks Athletic on the first night of the season.
Speaking in Bishopstown after the announcement, O’Connor said: “I’m delighted to be back. Cork is a second home to me, and it’s good to see a few old faces here. There are obviously only 13 games left so it’s going to be tough, it’s going to be a battle, but it’s the same for everybody in the league. We have to take it game by game and we need to try and maximise the amount of points we can take, so we want to hit the ground running.”
City boss Neale Fenn was delighted at the defender’s arrival, highlighting the experience that the 25 year old will bring to his young team.
“I spoke shortly after the break about the need to bring some experience into the squad, and certainly Kevin O’Connor brings us that. He knows the club well and he knows the league well, which was important to me. We needed that experience in such a young group, so I’m delighted that he agreed to come here. He’ll bring some experience and knowledge to our younger players.”
The City boss also said that his transfer business isn’t finished yet and he is hopeful of making a few more additions before the return to league action on 2 August: “We have a couple of targets that we’re working on from outside the league, so hopefully we’ll be able to pull those off and add a little more quality to our squad.”
Cork City return to competitive action on July the 25th against Midleton in the Munster Senior Cup. They will restart the League of Ireland season on the 2nd of August with a visit of Bohemians to Turners Cross.
