Waterford announce signing of Matty Smith and Tyreke Wilson
Premier Division Waterford have confirmed the double signing of Matty Smith and Tyreke Wilson ahead of the 2020 League of Ireland season.
Wilson, who is an Irish underage international and was capped at U17, U19, and U21 level has been signed from English Premier League champions Manchester City.
Having started his career at Dublin club Cherry Orchard the left-back has spent the last four years playing regularly for City’s underage teams and has made five reserve appearances this season.
22-year-old Smith has joined from Scottish side Dundee United. The attacker has spent the first part of the Scottish season on loan at Scottish League Two side Cove Rangers, scoring twice in 10 appearances.
Both of the new recruits spoke to WaterfordFC.ie following the announcement. Wilson expressed his desire to play first-team games and what the Blues fans can hope to expect from him this year. “I’m an all-round fullback. I like to defend, but I’m always keen to push forward as well and try to get balls into the box. I’d base myself off Ashley Cole, so I’d like to play like him.
“I want to get playing football regularly at first-team level. I’m hoping for a good run of games here and to see where I can go.”
Smith spoke of a few familiar faces he will meet at the RSC
“I’m glad to be here and looking forward to getting started. I know Scotty and Ali and I’ve heard good things about the club. They’ve had good things to say about the team and the club as a whole.
“Hopefully I’ll be able to score plenty of goals here. I’m a very attacking-minded player. Hopefully, I can bring plenty of enjoyment to the fans while I’m here.
“I’ve been out with injuries, so it’s good for me to have pre-season to work through. It gives me a chance to get fit for the 14th of February.”
