Ireland under-21 Jason Knight signs new deal with Derby County
Ireland under-21 regular Jason Knight has today signed a new deal with Derby County. Along with his fellow academy graduate Morgan Whittaker the ex-Cabinteely man has been tied down until 2023.
Knight who made his debut in the opening day fixture against Huddersfield as a late substitute has gone on to make 18 first team appearances to date.
His performances of late mean that he has become a regular fixture in ex Barcelona star Phillip Cocu’s plans.
“We’re delighted that Jason and Morgan have committed their long-term futures to Derby County,” Cocu said.
“Both players have been with the first-team since the start of pre-season and have shown real progression during that time.
He has started the Rams last 8 league games and announced himself to Championship fans while bagging his first 2 senior goals in a 2-1 home win against Charlton Athletic at the end of December.
His energetic displays even led to praise from ex Man United star and current team mate Wayne Rooney. “I’ve been really impressed with the way they’ve trained, particularly Knighty.
“His energy, his attitude. He almost reminds me of myself when I was younger in terms of no fear,” Rooney told Rams TV.
He spoke today on penning a new deal “The last year or so has been amazing for myself personally and to top it off with a new contract is amazing.
“The club has a lot of faith in the youngsters coming through and that’s exciting".
Knight has been one of the shining lights in a mixed season for the east midlands club and he will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of ex Derby academy graduate and Ireland International Jeff Hendrick and pushing on to Premier League and senior honours.
