Setanta "down the list of priorites" for Fenlon
Bohemians boss Pat Fenlon today conceded that although the team are looking forward to competing in the Setanta Sports Cup, it is “probably a bit down the list of priorities” for the current League and Cup champions.
“Glentoran and Linfield are two great clubs who share a rivalry that many people here find it hard to understand. The lads will enjoy playing against Glentoran because it’s a new team for them to play against... they’d rather be playing another match than training,” the league leaders’ manager said.
Speaking about this weekend’s clash with the champions from north of the border, Glentoran, Fenlon said that captain Owen Heary and Mark Rossiter would both definitely be out for the match in the Oval on Saturday: “Mark [Rossiter] may return for Tuesday [the match against Sligo Rovers] but Owen will probably be out for that as well. We may have Gary [Deegan] and Paul [Keegan] back for Saturday though.”
“The move to have the matches on weekends may help attendances because north of the border they’re used to playing on Saturdays and down here it would be a lot easier for many people to travel on weekends,” Fenlon stated.
Asked about Platinum One and their attempts to create an All-Ireland League, Fenlon said: “Any group that can bring Real Madrid to Dublin has to be taken seriously. There should be a way for all of us, north and south, to sit down and talk about how we’re going to progress the game.”
Fenlon also spoke about how there was significant interest in Bohemians about the Setanta Cup because this is the first time the club has featured in the competition: “There has been some interest because people feel that we were missing out on it the last few years.”
Speaking about the possibility of fixture congestion, Fenlon stated that even though there was an extra team in the competition this year, it wouldn’t bother Bohemians too much because the fixtures are so spread out across a few months.
The Bohemians manager also spoke about his side’s activity in the transfer market: “We won’t be buying anybody and we won’t be selling anybody unless big money is offered.”
Brian Shelley was also present in DCU and gave his opinion on how he feels his side will do: “If we keep the 19 lads we have in the squad fit, I think we’ll be a mtach for anybody. I think we have the quality to do the treble this year, but we’ll take it one game at a time.”
Kick off for the Setanta Sports Cup opener at the Oval on Saturday is 5.30pm
