Oriel Park to host the 2020 President's Cup between Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers
SSE Airtricity League Champions Dundalk have been drawn at home in the 2020 President's Cup final against FAI Cup holders Shamrock Rovers.
The traditional curtain raiser for the new senior men’s domestic season takes place in Oriel Park on Sunday 9 February, with the kick-off time yet to be confirmed.
Dundalk have played in the last five editions of the competition (and against Cork City in the last four finals). This will be the third time that the Lilywhites will host the final and they have won the competition twice.
They beat St. Pat’s in Oriel Park in 2015 and defeated Cork City 2-1 in Turner’s Cross in February this year – that was one of four domestic trophies won by Vinny Perth’s men as they collected the league, EA Sports Cup, President’s Cup and Unite the Union Cup during 2019.
This game is a replay of last month's FAI Cup final which saw Shamrock Rovers prevail on penalties against the Lilywhites to lift the trophy for the first time in 32 years. That cup win gives them the chance to win the President’s Cup for the very first time.
President Michael D. Higgins put his name to the competition in 2014 reflecting his keen interest in the game here (he even has his own extratime.ie profile!).
Before President Higgins took up the highest office in the land, he was President of Galway United Football Club and was a member of the board at the club.
