Greg Sloggett departs Derry to join Dundalk
Dundalk have completed their first signing since the culmination of the 2019 SSE Airtricity League season in the form of midfielder Greg Sloggett, who joins the club from Derry City.
The 23-year-old Meath native joins the champions following an excellent campaign with Derry City which saw him play 34 times in midfield as the Candystripes qualified for the UEFA Europa League.
A potential move for Sloggett had been talked about for several weeks and he was in attendance at the Aviva Stadium as Dundalk lost the FAI Cup final to Shamrock Rovers on penalties last weekend.
On Thursday, Derry manager Declan Devine confirmed the news that no Candystripes fan wanted to hear when he announced that Sloggett had officially departed the club, paving the way for Dundalk.
“I’m delighted to get the deal done and I’m very proud to join the biggest club in the country,” said Sloggett.
“It’s impossible to turn down the champions of Ireland. The success that Dundalk have had in recent years is incredible. It’s something that I want to be a part of and to help bring more success to this club.”
Sloggett should provide some much-needed cover for Chris Shields, who missed the FAI Cup final through suspension.
Dundalk’s new signing began his career with UCD where he spent five years before joining Derry in 2019.
